A garden has a perimeter of 120 feet. The difference between the length and twice the width is 24 feet. The first equation in our system would be the one for the perimeter. 
120=2x+2y
The second equation will represent the relation between x and y given in the problem.
24=x-2y
Now we can simply add these two equations. 
+2y and -2y will cancel and we are left with:
144=3x
x=48ft
Now we can use any of the equation to calculate y. We simply plug in x=48 and we calculate y.
24=x-2y
24=48-2y
2y=48-24
2y=24
y=12ft
