Just like Napoleon, the Russian winter made Germany slow and hard to fight. It was unbearable for German troops to cross and fight. Since Hitler didn't read his history books, Napoleon was marching further then the Russians used the plunder tactic, burn their city and retreat. So the enemy couldn't live in the city cause it was burned and the temperatures was harsh.
