Metabolism is defined as group of chemical processes that takes place in the body to produce energy for the cells to perform normally and maintain life.
Metabolic processes are of 2 types:
- Catabolic process
- Anabolic process
Catabolic process involves the breakdown of larger molecules into smaller ones and generates energy such as digestion.
Anabolic process is defined as the combination of smaller units to form a large molecule such as formation of a protein.

There are three main purposes of metabolisms, such as the conversion of food to energy to run cellular processes, the conversion of food to building blocks for proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and some carbohydrates and also the elimination of nitrogenous wastes. Energy used in organisms is called metabolism.
Metabolic reactions can be categorized as catabolic, where the breaking down of compounds, for example the breaking down of glucose to pyruvate by cellular respiration. Metabolic reactions also can be categorized as or anabolic, the synthesis of compounds. Usually, catabolism releases energy and anabolism consumes energy.
There are many types of energy transformations such as oxidative phosphorylation, energy from inorganic compounds, and energy from light.
In oxidative phosphorylation, the electrons are removed from organic molecules in areas, such as the protagon acid cycle are transferred to oxygen and the energy released used to make ATP.
Chemolithotrophy is a type of metabolism which is found in prokaryotes where energy is obtained from the oxidation of inorganic compounds.
The energy in sunlight is captured by plants, cyanobacteria, purple bacteria, green sulfur bacteria. This process is often coupled to the conversion of carbon dioxide into organic compounds. For example, during the process of photosynthesis, plants convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy stored in molecules.
