The challenges characters have to overcome in fictional works is known as the A. conflict. Conflict refers to problems, dangers, hurdles, that a particular character has to solve in order to move on with his or her life (and with the story itself). Plot refers to the story - what is going on in a text. Setting refers to time and place when and where the text is happening. Theme refers to the overall topic of the text.
