Leading up the the Missouri Compromise, Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery states were causing a lot of tension between all of the states so the Union adopted Maine to help deal with this and balance out this issue of tension. Along with Maine, Missouri was adopted and signed in as a state to help balance out the southern Pro-slave states.

Hopefully this helps.

One more state was added to the United States as a ‘Slave State’ but it kept the balance between Free State and slave states as Maine was added as a Free State.

Further Explanation:-

In the year 1820, there was an increase in tensions between slave states and free states on the issue of slavery and during the same time, The United States Congress passed a law under which Missouri was admitted to the Union of United States as a Slave State. To keep the balance between free states and the Slave States in the United States, Maine was added as a Free State just a year before the addition of Missouri. Just before this compromise took place, there were tensions growing between the north and the south as the northern states heavily criticized the fact that the slaves were allowed by slaves.

If we look at the constitutional standpoint of this compromise then it can be seen as one of the most important examples of exclusion of slavery from the United States territory acquired since the ordinance of northwest came into effect but this compromise is also seen as deeply disappointing for African-Americans as progression of people from the south of gradual emancipation at southern border of Missouri and it also legitimized slavery as a part of south.
