The major difference of Japan and China at the end of the 19th century is most likely that Japan have been more open of their culture to western and modern influences, while China have seemed unlikely and still adhered to their customs.

Japan was much more toward modernization with changes in society and politics.

Western ideas were welcomed with its governance which led to the decline of the Samurai class.

In China, things were different despite the growing influence of western culture in different countries.

China was still attached to its traditional culture and customs.

There was a fusion of western and Chinese culture in China during the 19th century.

Therefore we can conclude that both nations have different approaches towards western ideas.
