The Paris Commune was a brief insurrectional movement that governed the city of Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871, establishing a popular self-managed socialist political project.
Because Paris did not accept to surrender, the new National Assembly and the provisional government of the Republic, presided over by Adolphe Thiers, preferred to settle in Versailles and from there to subdue the rebellious population. The vacuum of power in Paris caused the citizen militia, the French National Guard, to effectively take power in order to ensure the continuity of the functioning of the city's administration. Its objective was to save the republic from the royalists .
