Draw 4 cubes, each with the side measuring x.
The volume of a cube is the cube of the side length.
One cube has volume x^3.
The 4 cubes combined have a volume of 4x^3.

Now take away one cube.
You are now subtracting x^3 from 4x^3, so you are representing 4x^3 - x^3.
