SAN FRANCISCO, California (Achieve3000, May 12, 2016). Many people use messaging apps like Facebook's Messenger or Kik Interactive's Kik. Now, these businesses will offer something new. They're automated assistants known as "chatbots." They will soon be part of many online texting services.

Chatbots, or bots, can "talk" almost like people. Users ask questions. Bots give answers. They can also do simple jobs.

Bots can handle more jobs than regular apps. Regular apps force a user to make choices from a drop-down menu. Bots are different. They can recognize either spoken or typed words. And reaching a chatbot is simple. A user just needs to click a link in an online ad.

In Asia, software bots are already being used. Samantha Guo is from Washington, D.C. She visited China in early 2016. She was amazed at how often her friends there used bot technology. One is the Asian texting service WeChat. Guo's friends used it. They paid for meals and ordered movie tickets. They even sent each other gifts through WeChat.

People in the U.S. may soon be doing the same. There, some Kik users are starting to use bots. Kik users can talk to bots that will answer questions about the weather. The bots can show videos. They can help someone with online shopping.

Will people welcome the new bots? Time will tell.
