George Washington’s quote best describes what concerns Americans had about joining North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The NATO pact was alliance of United States and West Europe to counter weight the Soviet Union and keep Germany grounded. Even though, United States joined alliance with more than half votes, many were concerned about meddling with European politics. Those who opposed United States joining the alliance were called Isolationist as they considered that politic isolation from Europe was the best for the state. They went back to George Washington's Farewell Address (1796), in which he admonished his fellow Americans to beware of the Europeans, to prove their point.
Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? ... It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world ...
