The course of true love never did run smooth,” comments Lysander, articulating one of A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s most important themes—that of the difficulty of love (I.i.134).

Answer:

The example of motif highlighted in Act 2, is found in Scene 1, where there's a conflict between the lovers(Fairy King and Queen and Athenian Lovers).

Explanation:

A motif in literature is any recurring symbolic image or an idea. Motifs includes symbols, sound or an action. Motif works towards the development of the theme of a text.

In Act 2, the motif that has been displayed by Shakespeare is "love going out of balance" which contributes to the theme of difficulty in love of the play.

In Act 2, Scene 1, the world of fairies is introduced to the audience. There is a King and a Queen of these fairy world, namely, King Oberon and Queen Titania. They both are not talking to each other because of a changeling that Titania is bearing. This boy belongs to a servant of the Queen, who gave her life for the Queen. They both are fighting over this matter. And, on the other hand, Athenian Lovers, i.e., Hermia, Helena, Lysander, Demetrius, are also fighting.

Hermia and Lysander love each other but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. Demetrius on the other hand is a fickle lover, who once was in love with Helena, friend of Hermia, but now left her to marry Hermia.

Later, this difficulty of love is increased when Puck by mistake puts the magical portion in Lysander's eyes mistaking him to be Demetrius.

So, the motif found in Act 2 is of love going out of balance which contributes in the development of the theme of difficulty in love.
