From reading this passage above, it seem's like this person is no longer tries to catch the ball. As you notice, he says " Tugging at my cap in just the right way, Crouching low, my feet set. "Hum baby” sweetly on my lips. ". This seem's like he haven't been doing so good in baseball and is wanting to give up.
