In Beowulf, there are three basic themes.
- The significance of defining identity,
- conflicts between the heroic code and other value systems,
- and the distinction between a good warrior and a good ruler are among the subjects explored.
Beowulf represents good; he fights for what is right and embodies the qualities that Anglo-Saxon warrior culture valued most highly. Grendel, on the other hand, signifies evil and reflects characteristics that the Anglo-Saxons despised or did not appreciate.
