Sumalee won 40 super bouncy balls playing horseshoes at her schools game last night. Later, she gave two to each of her friends. She only has 8 remaining. How many friends does she have?

Let us assume the number of friends Sumalee has = x
Then
2x + 8 = 40
2x = 40 -8
2x = 32
x = 32/2
x = 16

To find this we are first going to SUBTRACT to see how many balls she gave ALL her friends in total:- 

40 - 8 = 32

Now we will divide to see how many friends she has. 

32 ÷ 2 = 16

Check your work:-

16 × 2 = 32

So, she has 16 Friends.
