Even though axial and appendicular bones are made up of similar basic constituents of calcium and protein matrix, and also though both have functions of weight bearing as well as those of stability, balance and protection of organs, the main function of axial skeleton is that of posture, stability and balance, whereas the main function of the appendicular skeleton is locomotion, digital manipulation leading to feeding, and reproduction. The axial skeleton is fused, whereas the appendicular skeleton is not fused.
