The primary reason behind the use of atomic bombs on Japan by U.S.A was in order to bring about a speedy conclusion to the war and save lives.
What were these Atomic Bomb?
The United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively.
In July 1945, U.S.A's Manhattan Project had produced two types of atomic bombs: "Fat Man", a plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapon; and "Little Boy", an enriched uranium gun-type fission weapon was used.
Over the next two to four months, the effects of the atomic bombings killed between 90,000 and 146,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000 and 80,000 people in Nagasaki.
Other reasons behind the dropping of the bombs were:
1. US’s desire to establish its dominance in the region after the war, enabling U.S.A to establish a permanent military presence, shape its political and economic system and dominate the Pacific region without fear of Japanese resurgence
2. The US consequently wished to prevent a Soviet advance in Asia and subsequent Soviet influence on Japan.
3. US wanted to demonstrate its unique military power – its possession of the atomic bomb – in order to gain political and diplomatic advantage over the Soviet Union in the post-war settlement in both Asia and Europe
