One thing that is true, the American Literature was taught to always question authority, this was obviously not good.

Yes. American literature from the Colonial times still influence us today, as it is our past history, and we must learn from history to find answers for problems today. While some parts of the colonial time period's thinking should not affect us today (such as the allowance of owning guns), the general aspect, and the thought of creating "a more perfect union" should still be in context today and in the future, regardless of the time.
