The basal ganglia are associated with the emotional processes of the brain.  Older adults tend to have more optimistic outlook and positive emotions.

On the other hand, the frontal cortex is responsible for higher executive cognitive processes such as multitasking, maintaining focus and making plans.

The emotional processing areas of the brain are preserved over time, whereas higher-order executive cognitive processes seem to decline. The cerebrum  is part of the brain that houses the parts of the brain that control and relate to emotions, the right hemisphere is responsible for emotional and artistic expression as well as most functions on the left side of the body, the frontal lobe  masterminds complex mental processes including emotions and so on.
