Hello there,
The following would be an example will be an example of a word problem that includes substitution and elimination and solve it.
Billy-bob want's to buy some cookies. His kid's named "texaschica" and "Astute" and "Buckethead" want some cookies. "texaschica" wanted 2. "astute" wanted 5. And "buckethead" wanted 12. So how many cookies does billy-bob have to buy?
2x+5x+12x.
So the first thing we want to do is eliminate and take off the x's.
No let's do the problem.
2+5+12= 19.
We can now substitute the x's
Your correct answer would be 19x.
Hope this helps.

elimination :
u went to the store and purchases 2 shirts and 3 caps and spend 20 bucks. ur friend went to the same store and purchased 3 shirts and 1 cap and spend 16 bucks. What was the price of a shirt and a cap ? (x = shirts and y = caps)
2x + 3y = 20
3x + y = 16....multiply by -3
---------------
2x + 3y = 20
-9x - 3y = - 48 (result of multiplying by -3)
---------------add
-7x = - 28
x = -28/-7
x = 4 <=== each shirt costs $ 4
3x + y = 16
3(4) + y = 16
12 + y = 16
y = 16 - 12
y = 4 <=== each cap costs $ 4

substitution :
Mike is 5 years older then 4 times his daughters age. His daughter is 7 years old. How old is Mike ? (x = daughters age)
m = 4x + 5
x = 7
m = 4(7) + 5
m = 28 + 5
m = 33 <=== Mike's age
