3.personification

Personification is whenever one attributes human characteristics to a non-human object or idea. Apostrophe, on the other hand, has to do with speaking directly to someone who is absent or dead.

Excerpt 1: Personification. In this excerpt sleep is personified. One is unable to murder sleep. It also describes sleep as the "chief nourisher in life's feast."

Excerpt 2: Apostrophe. Lady Macbeth is talking a to a dead man. It is clear that he is dead because she states "who could have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?"

Excerpt 3: Personification. Macbeth talks about pity "like a naked new born". A naked new born is a human characteristic.
