The yellow box represents a cell with a semi-permeable membrane. The small, blue dots represent molecules of water, and the larger, gray dots represent a solute such as sugar or salt. The membrane is thin enough for water to pass through, but it is not thin enough for the solute to pass. What will happen to the substances in this diagram to bring the concentrations closer to equilibrium?

Respuesta :

The answer would be osmosis

Osmosis is the movement of water caused by the difference in osmotic pressure. The salt or any solute that hydrophilic will attract water. But since it cannot move/diffuse pass the membrane, it is the water that will move to the solute. This will cause the volume of the box with more solute/salt increases.

Water will flow out of the cell and into the surrounding environment.
