This is because of the idea of iconoclasm. The idea is that it is idolatry to draw paintings or similar things of saints or prophets because you would be praying to a statue or a painting instead of the idea of the spirit and the prophet themselves which is why it is idolatry. It used to be common even in the Christian world.
My answer to the open question about the controversy in adding imagges to Islamic art is that:
- As long as the images do not undermine the religion in any way, then it can be added.
According to the religion of Islam, the adherents believe that God is the one and true God and Prophet Muhammad is his prophet who was instrumental to the spread of Islam to the people of all nations.
As a result of this, people are divided in their opinion about the issuee of adding certain images in Islamic art as some people believe that it is idolatry and should not be allowed, while some people are actually okay with the idea.
Based on my personal knowledge and opinion, i would say that as long as the images do not undermine the religion in any way, then it can be added.
