Strenuous Manual Labor
Ruthless Plantations owners
This is what Saint Dominique was dependent upon

Haiti was the first Latin American country to become independent of France through the Haitian Revolution. The system of production was that of plantation, implemented by the French. Named a colony of Saint Domingue, the country was the largest sugar producer in the world and the main exporter of coffee to Europe. In addition, there was the commercialization of slaves.

After the revolution that culminated in independence, the Haitian economy was structurally shaken. The country had to pay compensation to France and saw the overthrow of the plantation system, which was replaced by subsistence agriculture.

To this day, Haiti suffers the consequences of its troubled historical process. The country is miserable and depends heavily on donations and has a domestic economy limited to basic commodities such as manufacturing.
