jane paid $40 for an item after she received a 20% discount. janes friend says this means that the original price of the item is $48 IS janes friend correct why or why not

48x0.2= $9.6
$48-9.6=$38.40 Her friend is incorrect. 
40/48 =0.83 or about 83% So, in this case she only got 17% off. :)
