McDonald v. Sante Fe Trail Transport (1976) was a Supreme Court case in which it was found that white citizens had standing to claim a violation of their civil rights when suffering disparate treatment compared to to a similarly situated black person. Appellate courts had previosly held that only racial minorities had standing to make claims of racial discrimination. In reversing this finding, the Supreme Court established the principle that the civil rights protections prohibited all discrimination based on race whether or not the subject of discrimination belonged to a racial minority.
