Even though the war ended in 1865 with the defeat of the Confederacy, there was a still a conflictive sentiment among the residents of the southern states.
Efforts were made in order to stabilize the ongoing social conflicts at the time. Among the actions taken to achieve this was the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau in 1865, which provided housing, food, and medical aid to former black slaves and impoverished whites in the aftermath of the war. The other effort was the Ku Klux Klan Act, which aimed to suppress the activities of this racist organization throughout South Carolina and other southern states.
