He called these factors "source traits". This theory of personality factors and the self-report instrument used to measure them are known respectively as the 16 personalityfactor model and the 16PF Questionnaire (16PF).

Cattell also developed an assessment based on these 16 personality factors. The test is known as the 16 PF Personality Questionnaire and is still frequently used today, especially in career counseling, marital counseling, and in business for employee testing and selection.
