The delegates believed that compromiseĀ was key to keeping the Union together and becoming a great nation. If you see in their second act, they state what the union wouldn't be great without compromise.
The delegates felt that compromise was the major concept that needed to be looked at as a way to keep the country from splitting over slavery. The states, now that the number had more than doubled, needed to find a way to answer the question of how to admit new states and what these states would be allowed to pursue in the way of allowing slavery within their borders.
