The ambulance drivers are using disassociation as a means to handle the trauma which they have to deal with. Being around continuous life or death situations and having to be the first phase of treatment can be very traumatising. To be more proficient in their jobs, they must not allow emotion to creep in and get in the way of them functioning to the best of their abilities.
