This ended up in a showdown between Mark Antony and Octavian, which Octavian won. Octavian renamed himself Augustus, meaning son of god, and is the first emperor of Rome, even though he attempted to rebuild the republic. Octavian's new empire had the emperor dominating everything, including religion etc. He also set up the Pax Romana, which lasted for 2 centuries after his death and allowed Rome to grow to its peak.
