Let inlet pipe be, X, and hose be Y. Both can fill the pond in 88 hours. i. e, X + Y = 88. Suppose the hose, Y, can fill the pond in M hours. Then the inlet should do so in M -1 hours. I.e X = M-1. Substituting back into original eqn we have M-1 +M = 88. 2M = 88 -1 = 87; M = 43.5 which is time it takes for the hose to fill the pond. It follows that the inlet X will do the job in 43.5 -1 = 42.5.
