Punctuated equilibrium theory states that species stay the same for a long time and then change quickly because of environmental changes and new species arise.
This theory predicts that a lot of evolutionary change takes place in short periods of time tied to speciation events. According to this theory there is a very little change, and one or a few huge changes occur through mutations in the genes of a few individuals.
