They were treated very badly. They were targeted by white supremacists and other groups, like the Klu Klux Klan, even after coming back to the country as veterans. They were seen as inferior and gave the African Americans new found motivation to fight against this racial injustice. 

During they period, the Africa American soldiers were treated badly in American cities.

It should be noted that during this period, there was a lot of racism and discrimination in American societies.

The returning African Americans were treated badly. They were also a target for white supremacists and the Klu Klux Klan group ven  though some were veterans. They were seen as being inferior to the whites.
