EXPLANATION

Autonomy in a relationship means that you are able to make your own decision, including daily activities, future dreams, etc. This is one of the most basic human rights. Many people take their autonomy for granted, but truly it is an important part of someone’s life, that some people find themselves not having autonomy and cannot choose for themselves. Sometimes, it is important for partners to loosen the grip on each other, give each other some space and autonomy so that it can eventually improve the relationship itself.

Autonomy is proven to improve the satisfaction of a relationship. According to Northwestern University research, it is found that the individuals who are in a relationship that is focused on self-growth and self-direction have the highest relationship satisfaction. A relationship’s well-being will be increased if the partners are allowed to be independent, whether in their daily lives or in their own decision of staying in the relationship or not. In a simpler way, autonomy will improve the happiness of individuals that are in a relationship, and it will also increase relationship satisfaction.

Studies have also proven that the relationships who were applying autonomy, will be less defensive in conflicts and more understanding in resolving a problem. Autonomy will lead you into having healthier conflict resolution.
