The Battle of Antietam, was a battle during the American Civil War. It took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862.
It is considered to be the bloodiest day of the Civil War, with over 22,000 dead, wounded and missing people.
It was important as a border state location because it was the first invasion of Union territory, and despite an apparent loss for the Union, it was later considered to be a strategic victory for the Union.
