Answer: Commas and colons
Explanation:
Colons can be used to illustrate or introduce an idea or information, etc. but it always had to be preceded by a complete thought. For example:
We ate a lot today: Two pizzas, two sandwiches each, and ice cream.
I will not work on my novel today: I am so sleepy.
In both examples, the colons introduce extra information to the main sentence, meaning that the information is not essential to understand the sentence and can be removed.
Commas can also be used to set off extra information or information that is not essential to the meaning of the sentence, that is to say, nonrestrictive clause or appositive phrases. For example:
Maria, my red-head cousin, has never been nice to me.
I read books all day long, which it's a common thing for me to do, but this time I even forgot to eat!
Notice that if we were to take out the information set off by commas, the sentence would still make sense.
