After three years in the Dred Scott decision, the Supreme Court declared that the Congress did not have the authority to prohibit slavery in the territories and called it unconstitutional.

The tensions increased after Missouri’s request which it made to the government in regards to admission of Missouri to the United States as a ‘Slave State’. Government saw this as a threat of balance between Free states and Slave States because at that time there were 22 states in united states which were equally divided in slave and free states. The another issue when the government of united States had to face slavery issue again was the Compromise of 1850, It was a package of bill from 5 states which was passed by Congress of United States in year 1850 and this bill defused the tensions between slave and Free states. The debate about slave and free states during this period again rose because of American-Mexican war. As southerners wanted to expand slavery to the lands that were newly acquired and northerners were opposing it.  After this came the period of 1854 when “Bleeding Kansas” took place. This was a series of civil protests in United States which took place between and this was because of debate over legality in regards to slavery in Kansas.
