The theory of motivation states that an individual's basic needs should be met before he can go for higher needs, however here Prof. tells that in most of the individualistic cultures self esteem was considered so important that people could starve themselves for certain causes.
The answer is: Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Maslow's hierarchy of needs separates the needs that felt by individuals into 5 levels., and people would always thrive to fulfill their needs to the highest level.
In that hierarchy, basic needs such as foods and drinks located on the bottom of the hierarchy. This mean that people often willing to sacrifice this to obtain the needs in higher hierarchy such as self esteem.
