When Cornwallis and Tavington are having their meeting, they are talking about how wars are fought. Cornwallis says that “they need to fight ‘like gentlemen’ and that people are judged by the manner in which a war is fought. “ What does this mean? this means

this means the paitriots were being judged by the way they prepared for war and the way they caught the war

For Cornwallis the Honor, strategy and intelligence were key points in his way to lead his armies, and fight the different battles in which he was involved.

So he wasn´t too interested in the fact to win (or be defeatead) by any method, a good planification and basically using an effective strategy, besides  to be generally succesful, was a really ¨classy¨ and respected way to win.
