The reasons why elephants are considered to be a bad choice for studying genetic inheritance are the following;

-          Elephants has one or two offspring in which they produced in their lifetime and by that, there is only little information that could be gained and collected from it.

-          Elephants live for a long time in which one generation is not applicable for studying because their generation span is slowly passing which is not considered to be practical for the study.

Genetics is the study of heredity and inheritance of genes. There are several organisms used in genetics to understand the genotypic, evolution, and adaptations of organisms. Elephants are not ideal choice for genetics because they have slow maturity rate and have long life span.

The elephants are not the best choice for the study of genetic inheritance, because:

  • Elephants mates once or twice in their life time. The average offspring produced by elephants are one, two, or three. The information or inheritance study will be difficult on such number of progeny.
  • The elephants have long life span. They mature slowly and have an average life of 60 to 70 years. Thus, it makes it difficult for the scientists to study the inheritance pattern, observe phenotypic characters in offspring, and their analysis.

Therefore, the elephants are not ideal choice for genetic study because of their long life span.
