The cell cycle is the sequential series of events of cell growth and cell division which produces daughter cells.  

The cell cycle of a cell usually completes in 24 hours which is divided into two phases: interphase and M-phase. Interphase is categorized into G₁, S, G₂ and G₀ phase whereas M-phase is enlisted in prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase followed by cytokinesis.  

The important function of the cell cycle is that a cell can accurately duplicate the huge amount of DNA and segregation of the same duplicated DNA into two formed daughter cells. The duplication of DNA takes place in S-phase whereas cell division after M-phase during Cytokinesis.
