Shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph.
If you are photographing a subject that is in motion, you will get different effects at different shutter speeds. The faster the shutter speed, the shorter the time the image sensor is exposed to light; the slower the shutter speed, the longer the time the image sensor is exposed to light.

The shutter speed is amount of time the film is exposed to incoming light. The slower the shutter speed, the more time the film is exposed to light. A photographer would want to use a slower shutter speed if he/she was taking a photo in a dark location, so the light has more time to enter, and vise versa.
