Biographies have changed significantly throughout their existence. At their origin, biographies were mainly meant to contribute to the study of history. Therefore, they dealt with characters that transformed the world, such as rulers. Moreover, they were usually less objective and more admiring, offering little criticism. Nowadays, biographies focus more on the individual experience of the person, and they offer a more critical and complex approach. They also include more common people, as opposed to rulers or politicians.
