We study sensation and perception in psychology because sensation helps us to use well and explore the five basic senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste and feeling so that we could be more aware of the stimulus around us. And once we are able to pick the stimulus up, our body then perceives what it can perceive and react appropriately according to the environment.
The story of heather sellers who suffered from a rare neurological condition called prosopagnosia, which affects her ability to recognize faces, would help explain to us the importance of studying perception and sensation. A sensation is a process of using the senses in sensing the environment while perception is the process of interpreting these senses and since these can be impaired, studying and understanding them is vital in order to know its treatment.
