German amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered in his excavations "cities described by Homer".

Heinrich Schliemann was a German pioneer in the field of archaeology who was born in 1822. In northwestern Turkey, Heinrich Schliemann unearthed the site which was believed to be Troy in 1870. Schliemann was a German traveler and swindler who assumed sole praise for the disclosure, despite the fact that he was burrowing at the site, called Hisarlik, at the command of English archaeologist Frank Calvert.
