A rope 25 feet long is cut into 3 pieces. The first piece is 2x feet long, the second piece is 5x feet long, and the third piece is 4 feet long.

a.) Write and solve an equation to find x

b.) Find lengths of the first and second pieces.

so we know that:
 2x+3x+4 =25 (this is what the description above says).

we can add the xs and substract 4 from each side.

7x=21.

divide both sides by 7:
x=3 

and now the pieces:

first piece is 2x: 2*x=6.

second piece: 5*x=15 feet.
