The separation of powers best relate to the ideas of Baron de Montesquieu. In 1748, his Spirit of Laws called for constitutional government with the separation of executive, legislative, and judicial powers and due process of law including a fair trial and presumption of innocence; the freedom of thought, speech, and assembly; and an end to slavery. His ideas had a significant influence on the writing of the American Constitution.
