EXPLANATION

The economies of all the 13 British colonies in North America hung on slavery, either directly or indirectly. In Virginia, in the 1620s was established labor-intensive tobacco farming for the Europian markets. White indentured servants performed the heaviest labor. Before the year 1660, only a fraction of all the Virginia planters was held by the slaves.

By the year 1675, slavery was already well established. Slaves almost entirely had replaced the indentured servants by the year 1700. Southern planters prospered because they had plenty of land and slave labor, so they were able to grow the lucrative crop. The economic and social norm at that time was the family-based tobacco plantations.

The first Africans that arrived in British North America were 20 men and women. They specifically arrived at Jamestown, Virginia, in the year 1619. They were treated as captives. Privateers had seized them from Mexico's slave ship bound and traded them eventually in Virginia. The Africans then were put to work for the tobacco fields in Jamestown. At first, the Africans were put to work together with the white indentured servants.

By the year 1700, they were a total of 27,817 enslaved Africans. And by the year 1740, the number increased to a total of 150,024 slaves in British North America. The number kept increasing until it reached the number 462,000, which was about one-fifth of the total population of the colonial.
