Chandragupta Maurya is considered the greatest ruler in Indian history. He was important to the Indian civilization first because he united India as a single country for the first time during his reign. The country was divided into small states and under his rule, they were conquered and united under a political unity.
His reign also set India free from Greek rule - Alexander the Great and his successor Seleucus conquered India before. Chandragupta also married Seleucus daughter and this way, made way to India start a trade deal with the Western World.
Chandragupta also made social and political reforms - he created a central administration with bureaucratic structure - this made possible to the agriculture industry to gain strength and consequently, the economy made improvements.
In religion and culture, Buddism and Jainism became important religions under his reign. His empire lasted 137 years and it built the foundation of modern India.
