He was a famous forger, most notable for his forgeries of Jan Vermeer's paintings. He didn't want to make a copy of Vermeer's paintings, however, he wanted to create new ones in the style of Vermeer and sign it with his name, and he managed to do that. His most famous forgery is Supper at Emmaus.
